Department of M.Sc.Chemistry

The Science stream of college began in 1988. Since then the department of Chemistry is most practically involved in academic teaching, counseling and extension activities. The first batch of the students consisted of 29 students. There was only one lecturer, present head of the department. Now the department has expanded into the full-fledged faculty consisting of ten teachers and also started Post- graduation in Organic Chemistry in 2008. Being situated in rural area, initially the science faculty had poor enrollment. However, consistent counseling of students and interaction with parents resulted in better enrollment of students in the consequent years. Now the department has over 400 students.

Every single faculty member of this department, with a team spirit not only completes academic duties, but also accomplishes the role of teacher by motivating the students to take active interest in the subject.

The department of Chemistry gives advanced education of the subject of Chemistry at the undergraduate as well as postgraduate level. After completing their degree students are able to get jobs in industrial sector, educational sector and they also become capable for self employment. Thus it makes them economically independent and helps them to earn their living.

As required for continuous self- improvement, the faculty members have completed required number of Orientation & Refresher Courses; have been taking active part in workshops, seminars and syllabus framing workshops etc.

The department had also organized an inter-disciplinary National seminar on “New Trends in Life sciences and Biotechnology”, Workshops on “Finalising the Draft of S. Y. B. Sc. Chemistry Syllabus”, “Restructuring of F. Y. B. Sc. Chemistry Syllabus” & National Conference on “Recent Developments in Synthetic Organic Chemistry”. Besides teaching the department is extensively involved in co-curricular and extension activities playing lead role through Science Association, Competitive Examination Study Centre, Placement Cell, NSS, Art Circle, Staff Academy and Student Consumer Store etc. Department has own ‘Departmental Library’.

The department arranges visits to various industries and their chemical laboratories. This gives the students firsthand knowledge of the application of Chemistry in industrial field. Students are motivated to choose a topic and to speak on that topic in seminars. This helps them to form independent study habits and read various reference works on the subject.

Students are motivated to prepare charts and models on the topics related to the subject of Chemistry. They are able to grasp that topic in a better way when they work on preparation of such models and charts.

The students are also motivated to participate in competitive examinations like NET/ SET/ GATE/ DRDO/ ONGC/ HTPC/ NTPC/ BARC/ HP/ JAM/ MPSC/ UPSC. All necessary guidance is given time to time. Lectures of renowned and eminent teacher are arranged under the Quality Improvement Programme of Savitribai Phule Pune University. Well- known teachers in the field are invited. Students are benefitted from their guidance and they are able to face the examination with greater confidence. Department also conducts “Certificate Course in Dairy and Agricultural Chemistry”

The department wishes to start Post- graduation in Analytical Chemistry to extend laboratory, to establish Recognized Research Centre to promote research activities.
